Health Review: Keto ... Is It For Me?

Updated: Jun 29, 2019

When it comes to being #healthy, there is ALWAYS some new #trend that is the “be all, end all” answer to your weight loss or fitness woes. Over the years we have suffered through Atkins, The Zone, Weight Watchers, SlimFast, Jenny Craig, Juicing, Paleo, Whole30, Mediterranean, and too many more to count. The latest #craze that is the “answer” is the #Ketogenic Diet (also known as Keto), which is a #diet that consists of low #carbs and high fat that can provide a wide variety of health #benefits. Wait, wait, wait…. Did you say “high fat”? That doesn’t make any sense to me. If I’m trying to lose #weight, why am I ingesting high #fat?

"The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. It lowers blood sugar and insulin levels, and shifts the body’s metabolism away from carbs and towards fat and ketones."

There are studies (as there always are.. snarky comment) that state that this #diet proves you can lose weight and attain a number of major health #benefits. Allegedly, the #Keto diet can help your body combat #acne, #polycystic ovary syndrome, #heart disease, #diabetes, #epilepsy, #Parkinson’s, brain injuries, #cancer and #Alzheimer’s. That is a BIG ask. Supposedly, Keto requires you to curb your carbs and replace them with #fat. This will put your body in a #metabolic state called #ketosis which makes your body extremely efficient at burning fat for #energy and turning fat into ketones in the #liver, which are essential “brain food”. Keto diets show massive reductions in blood #sugar and #insulin which aid in the claim of so many health benefits.

So, how can you try out this diet? There is a wealth of information available about the diet. I am including one of the sources I used at the bottom of this review. First, there are foods you need to eliminate or drastically reduce. It goes without saying that first on that list is ANY food that is high in carbs. Other foods to get rid of or limit are sugary foods, #grains or starches, #fruit, #beans, root #vegetables, low fat or diet products, unhealthy fats, #alcohol, some #condiments and sauces, and #sugar free diet foods. Now the foods you CAN eat are #Meat, fatty #fish, #eggs, #butter/cream, #cheese, #nuts and seeds, healthy #oil, #avocados, low carb veggies and some condiments.

The one thing that is never mentioned is the “keto flu”. What is that? “Keto Flu” is a nasty side effect of being a new initiate to the keto #lifestyle. Keto flu can cause you to have poor energy and mental function, increased #hunger, #sleep issues, #nausea, #digestive discomfort and decreased #exercise performance. It is stated that this is due to your body adapting to your new food intake lifestyle because Keto changes the #water and #mineral composition of your body.

"A ketogenic diet may provide many health benefits, especially with metabolic, neurological or insulin-related diseases."

So is the Keto diet for me? That is a question you will have to ask yourself. It has the best results with people who are #overweight, diabetic or looking to improve their metabolic health. It is not the proper diet for high performance #athletes or anyone wanting to add weight or #muscle. However, if this is something you have been considering, do your research first. Studies say the research is there that proves the #nutritional power of the health and weight loss benefits in the Ketogenic diet. I suppose you will just have to find out for yourself.
